Our Commitment to Website Accessibility

WILMOT FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE is committed to providing a fully accessible website experience for all users of all abilities. This includes people who rely on assistive technologies like screen readers (which read words out loud), programs that make words bigger, or different kinds of keyboards to navigate the web.

Accessibility means giving people of all abilities opportunities to take part in everyday life by removing barriers. We want to help people with all kinds of disabilities and make sure everyone feels included and supported.

This matches our vision of building “strong and healthy communities where all individuals are accepted and have opportunities to participate and grow.”

We are committed to treating people with disabilities with respect and to help them stay as independent as possible.

Ongoing Efforts to Ensure Website Accessibility

We follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 as our guiding principle for determining accessibility. These guidelines are used around the world to help websites work better for people with different needs. As we add new pages and functionality to our website, all designs, code, and content entry practices are checked against these standards.

Website accessibility is an ongoing process. We test the website content and features for WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance and work to fix any issues to ensure we meet or exceed the standards. Our team uses industry-standard tools to test the website such as the Accessibility Checker WordPress Plugin, color contrast checkers, and keyboard tests. We also check how easy the words are to read and understand with readability tests.

Accessibility Features On Our Website

The following is a list of items we have included in our website to improve its accessibility:

  • Headings and labels in easy to read font that describe topic or purpose.
  • Accessible colour contrast
  • Plain easy to understand language which organizes information using familiar words

Where We’re Improving

In our efforts to bring our website up to standard, we are targeting the following areas:

  • Always combine alt text for all digital content
  • Ensure all documents are accessible (pdf, word)
  • All non-text content that is presented to the user has a text alternative that serves the equivalent purpose.
  • Color is not used as the only visual means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element.
  • Web pages have titles that describe topic or purpose

This is part of our broader effort to make everyone’s experience at WILMOT FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE a welcoming and enjoyable one. Please note that while we make every effort to provide information accessible for all users, we cannot guarantee the accessibility of third party websites to which we may link.
